Homes That Are a Good Fit for Yellow Labs

Yellow Labs are a delightful breed. Households that will do best with our yellow Labs for sale in Michigan are those that can prioritize exercise, giving their pups lots of physical activity. They also are homes where not everyone is gone all day, leaving the dog alone for long periods. Yellow Labs love company and being with their owners! Because they’re so large, they like to have enough space to move around, so a larger apartment or home is an especially great setting. Families can be a good fit for these pups — Labs are so companionable and loving. If you’re looking for a smart, active, friendly dog who will become a member of your household, you will love our Labrador pups.

Where does the Labrador come from?

The Labrador Retriever (also known as the ‘Labrador’ or its nickname the ’Lab’) is traced back to descending from the Newfoundland Dog and the St. John’s Water Dog in Newfoundland, Canada. The name however, Labrador Retriever, likely derives from the Portuguese ‘lavradores’ or Spanish ‘labradores’, both of which mean ‘farm worker’, some argue though the name came rather from the ‘Labrador’ region of Canada. The Labrador though, was bred for hunting in water and pulling boats, which is evident even today in its natural love for water and thick strong body. The Labrador Retriever was first recognized in America in 1917 and thereafter rose steadily in popularity due to its incredible versatility, obedience, phenomenal build and sturdy looks. It is now considered Americas most popular breed.

History of the Labrador

Historically the Labrador Retriever earned their keep as fisherman’s helper from the islands of Newfoundland off the Atlantic coast of Canada.  They would haul in the fish, fetch the nets and retrieve the fish.  English sportsmen noticed their usefulness and brought some back to England to use for hunting.  The Lab was almost extinct by the 1880’s but the English fans are credited for saving the breed.  In Newfoundland the breed did disappear because of their government strict laws.  Families were only allowed to have one dog, and females were highly taxed.  The breed was then imported into America and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1917.  They are now America’s most popular and sought-after dog.  The Labrador Retriever is an amazing dog and is used for many occupations. They work in search and rescue, drug and explosive detection, therapy, assist the disabled, retrieve for hunters, excel in competitive shows, agility and obedience.
